About This Location
The gravel road is 3.8 kilometers from a paved road. West Branch Campsite is open from May to November. There are 1-5 campsites at this area, with a maximum RV length of 25 feet. West Branch Campsite allows you to stay for 14 days.
Part of the Machias River Public Reserved Lands, managed by the Maine Department of Conservation, Parks, and Lands. This is a solitary campsite located on a dirt road with shoreline access to the river. This is one of the largest sites in the area. A solitary fire ring, picnic table, and vault toilet are provided. If you’re camping with a group, this spot can probably accommodate a few tents, vans, or truck campers. Motorhomes up to 26 feet are welcome if you don’t mind driving the miles of unpaved road to get here. When I went there, the road was in decent shape; there was some washboard, but it was dry and free of ruts. Despite the fact that it is still spring, this month has been very rainy.
The campsite was located on the Machias West Branch River, near to what the locals term a slide. I camped over the Fourth of July weekend, but there was only one other camper who stayed one night due to the weather. There was no cell service due to the distance, but I believe the area was well worth it. The place was just off the major road, but there wasn’t much traffic. The ranger stated that logging operations were halted due to the holiday. The space included a fire ring, picnic table, and pit toilet. I believe an RV longer than 25 feet will fit in here.
