Previous Reviews:
Tajique Campsite Estancia NM Boondocking: Tajique is open all year. This free campsite is located within the Cibola National Forest’s Mountainair Ranger District. First come -> first served. No reservations accepted.
I got in around sunset and left around noon the next day. It’s basically just a small loop parking area, with 3 sights around it, with picnic tables, trash bins in the middle, and a bathroom on one end. As mentioned, the entrance is a little tricky with potholes, but if you’re careful you can do it (I have a low-clearance Accord).
Nobody else was there when I was, on a Wednesday, but there was a lot of traffic, mostly pickups, some logging. Being right on the road, there is no escaping the passing vehicles, though the following morning I did find the best site there which is tucked back a bit.
I didn’t even notice it initially, but if you cross the small stream behind the other sites (there are two logs for that), you find a great campsite with some privacy and lots of room, a picnic table, a fire pit, and fresh cow patties (never saw cows).
Overall, it’s a nice setting, with deer walking by occasionally, but it’s not well-maintained (picnic tables falling apart, trash overflowing at bins, and trash around sites), not great for RVs (aka, not flat), and not great (but doable) for tents for the same reason, with the exception being the site across the stream.
