About This Location
Hazel Creek is in a remote area without cell phone service. This primitive campground is popular with OHV/ATV riders, equestrians, and mountain bikers.
There is a trailhead for the Ozark Trail is on the road leading into the campground.
Hazel Creek is part of the Old Lead Belt, where much of the nation’s lead ore was once mined. This site features a foundation from a historic lead smelter.
Free camping in the Mark Twain National Forest. Primitive camping now: no mowing, no water, no toilets. Tables, fire rings, lantern posts and hitching posts provided. Serves as a trailhead on Ozark Trail. Horses welcome.
Directions: From St. Louis, take Hwy 21 south to Potosi (60 miles); then, take Hwy 8 west to first stoplight Hwy. P; continue south on Hwy. P (ca. 12 miles) to Hwy C; go west about 5 miles to Hwy Z and turn north; campground is about 4 miles.
