Great Basin NP Strawberry Creek Boondocking: Open all year. This is a high elevation location. What a lovely spot. Whole area has day use only signs. Some nice hikes now that things are growing back.
About This Location
The terrain around Great Basin NP Strawberry Creek sites is a mix of meadows and hillsides that are still recovering from a wildfire, which gives it a sort of rugged charm. There aren’t any hookups or fancy services, but honestly, that’s part of the appeal if you want to unplug and just enjoy the outdoors.
If you’re camping near Great Basin NP Strawberry Creek Boondocking is worth a look. It’s just north of the park’s main entrance on Highway 50, not far from Baker, Nevada.
There’s no entrance fee for Great Basin NP Strawberry Creek sites, so you can cruise right in without paying at the gate. You can show up any time of year—no need for reservations. The Great Basin NP Strawberry Creek sites are flat and scattered around a peaceful meadow, so you’re not crammed in with other campers.
There are restrooms, which is always a plus, but otherwise, it’s a pretty natural setting. The landscape is still bouncing back from a wildfire, so you get to see nature doing its thing.
Cell service is decent—AT&T and Verizon both work here. Sure, you might hear the occasional ATV during the day, but it’s spread out enough that you usually have plenty of space and privacy.
Sometimes cows wander through, but they generally keep their distance. The elevation’s about 7,400 feet, so it stays cooler than the desert below.
This spot is ideal if you want to soak up the park’s beauty without shelling out for a developed campground. Use it as your base to explore the park—think ancient bristlecone pines and those crazy dark night skies.
If you’re after quiet camping close to Great Basin National Park, this place checks a lot of boxes.
Directions
Great Basin NP Strawberry Creek sits out in east-central Nevada, about five miles west of Baker. From Baker, just hop on Highway 488 west and you’ll be at the park in no time.
If you’re coming from the east or west, take U.S. Highways 6 and 50. Turn south onto Nevada State Highway 487, drive those five miles to Baker, then west on Highway 488 for another five to the entrance of Great Basin NP Strawberry Creek sites.
Coming from the south? You’ve got a couple of options. Head north on Utah State Highway 21 through Milford and Garrison, which turns into Nevada State Highway 487 once you cross the line. Then, swing west on Highway 488 in Baker. Or, take U.S. Highway 93 north to the junction with U.S. Highways 6 and 50, then east to Highway 487, and south to Baker.
Just a heads-up: this is a seriously remote area. Cell service isn’t great, so make sure you bring what you need. Don’t trust your GPS blindly—sometimes those apps send you the wrong way out here.
Landmarks like the Lehman Caves Visitor Center or the town of Baker are way more reliable.
Make sure your vehicle can handle primitive roads near Strawberry Creek. Services are limited, so plan like you mean it.
