About This Location
This is a favorite spot in the Ouachita National Forest It is very secluded from the outside world but pretty easy to get to (unless you have an RV). Turn right off of FR 849 and you will have to maneuver around 3 large mudholes (or go through them if you like) and then the campsite will be right on the river on the right. It is a pull through. Very beautiful in the Spring when the water is flowing good.
When I stayed at this remote campsite in the winter, it was a peaceful retreat great for people who want to be alone and have a full outdoor experience. Sitting right on the edge of the river, the campsite is surrounded by the relaxing white noise of the rapids, making it the most peaceful place in the world. The thick layer of leaves covering the ground makes it feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but if you want to be comfortable, I suggest taking ground tarps with you when you go tent camping.
Getting to the campsite is an experience in and of itself. Along the way, you’ll have to drive through a lot of muddy spots. There are rocks at the bottom of most of these puddles, so high-clearance cars can go through them without four-wheel drive (4×4). But be careful as you get closer to the last set of mud holes near the camping. These are much deeper and have more potholes, so you’ll need a 4×4 to get to your goal safely.
One interesting thing about this spot is that it seems to be under a military flight path. Several times during my stay, I saw a group of propeller planes flying low over the valley. It was an unplanned but memorable part of the experience.
The tent is set up beautifully on a terrace just a few feet from the river. There is a rock fire ring there so you can spend cozy nights under the stars. There is no cell service and no one else on the road, which adds to the site’s isolation. This is a real gem for people who love peace and quiet and the natural beauty of the world. Putting lanterns on trees around the site and hanging them from nails adds a bit of convenience and atmosphere.
The spot is great for groups looking for a private getaway because it’s big enough to fit more than one tent. But because it’s hard to get to, I wouldn’t suggest bringing a trailer. Even though the drive out was rough and had at least 15 puddles, there were only a few tricky spots. This made the suggestion for a 4×4 vehicle even stronger, especially given how isolated it was.
To sum up, this campsite is perfect for travelers who want to be alone and connect deeply with nature. The peaceful setting and the difficulty and benefit of getting there make it an unforgettable outdoor experience.
