About This Location
People are still talking about whether Stoneman Lake was made by a volcano or if it’s just a big hole that fell in on itself. The spot where this natural body of water is found, sitting at the bottom of a big bowl-shaped valley and having a round shape, really backs up both ideas. The idea that faults in the rocks below are the only way for water to escape the lake makes the sinkhole theory seem even more likely.
Everyone can agree that the lake is a lot of fun for recreation. This medium-sized body of water, surrounded by Gambel oak and ponderosa pine-covered basalt slopes, is a super cool spot to watch birds during the yearly waterfowl migrations or all summer long for songbirds!
There’s a gravel parking lot and a boat ramp at a fun spot by the lake on the north side! There are picnic tables in the shady spots close by, making it a great place to hang out for a while.
This free campsite is located within the Coconino National Forest’s Red Rock Ranger District.
