About This Location

You may stay 14 days at Shores Recreation Site. There are places to park, fire pits for roasting marshmallows, and special toilets that are really cool! The camp sites are too small for motor homes that are bigger than a little pickup camper. You can find places to stay at hotels and campgrounds in the nearby towns of Winkelman, Kearny, Superior, Mammoth, and Globe. Winkelman has a super cool river park where you can camp, play in the water, use the toilets, and enjoy other fun stuff that everyone can use!

The Shores Recreation Site is located by the Gila River, about 3½ miles upstream from Winkelman and 3½ miles downstream from the Christmas Recreation Site. The site is simply set up to let people enjoy river activities like looking at the scenery, watching animals, having picnics, camping, fishing, and floating on small boats. The place has driveways made of gravel, some basic campsites, and two bathrooms. The site is located in a riparian area filled with mesquite-willow and cottonwood trees, nestled in a Sonoran desert canyon surrounded by hills covered in saguaro, mesquite, and palo verde.

Experience the Passage 15 of the roughly 800 mile Arizona Trail pictured here. This 28.1-mile point-to-point trail near Winkelman, Arizona. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 11 h 3 min to complete. This trail is great for backpacking, camping, and hiking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are January through April.
