About This Location

Great place for primitive camping. Nice, secluded and quiet. Yet not far from the main highway. Camping area is next to a hiking trail with awesome views of Syllamore Creek.

Day traffic leaves and nights are quiet. Week days are the best time to find the place empty. Close to nice restaurant and activities but secluded enough to be a peaceful affordable getaway.

Directions: From Mountain View, take Arkansas 14 west for 17.3 miles. Turn right (north) on Forest Service Road 1115 (gravel) and go 2.1 miles. Turn right on Forest Service Road 1112 and go 1.4 miles.

Hiking: Barkshed is the “end” of the North Sylamore Hiking Trail and the North Sylamore Extension to the Ozark Highlands Trail can be picked up here.

Wildlife Viewing: Wildlife in and around Barkshed is abundant, but you may have to have sharp eyes to see some of them. Deer and squirrels are abundant; bears and turkeys are more shy. You may also hear more birds than you see, especially along the hiking trail.

Swimming: Swimming is available in North Sylamore Creek. The main site is at the low-water bridge. Be aware that higher than normal bacteria counts may close a swim area; call ahead before traveling in the summer.
