This is a well-established USFS camp that charges no fees. It is located off a dirt road at the foot of the Capitan Mountains. The intersection (FR 57) connects the towns of Lincoln and Capitan. The boondocking campsites are rudimentary, with only a vault toilet and a few fire rings provided. It is not suitable for large RVs, but I have seen mid-sized fifth wheels there.
This is an excellent FREE campground. Desolate and quiet. It is surrounded by private land, so don’t be alarmed by the Private land signs on your way in. The 5-mile route up is difficult but manageable. Just be cautious and watch out for rancher trucks. Although there is no running water or power, the vault toilet is clean. We stayed for a week. It is a high altitude location, so be prepared for the weather.
