Access to the boondocking area is primarily via U.S. Route 70. When traveling east from Las Cruces, we turn right onto Aguirre Springs Road.

The road leads directly to the Aguirre Spring BLM Campground and surrounding boondocking locations.

The Aguirre Spring Recreation Area and Campground itself offers structured camping but the nearby areas along Aguirre Springs Rd provide opportunities for dispersed camping or boondocking. The terrain here is generally desert mountain landscape with varied open spots suitable for RV and tent camping without hookups.

The site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which allows for more flexible, primitive camping options compared to commercial campgrounds. This location is ideal for those who prefer minimal facilities and quieter surroundings near Las Cruces.

Directions

To reach Aguirre Springs Rd NM boondocking location, we start from Las Cruces, New Mexico. We take U.S. Route 70 heading east from the I-25/U.S. 70 interchange.

After driving approximately 14 miles east on U.S. 70, we look for the turnoff to Aguirre Springs Road. This turn is on the right side if we are traveling eastbound.

Once we turn south onto Aguirre Springs Road, we continue for about 1.1 miles to reach the boondocking area and campground.

The road is well marked and leads directly into the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.

For context, White Sands National Park is about a 45-minute drive southwest from Las Cruces. Caballo Lake State Park lies northeast of Las Cruces, offering another nearby spot for outdoor activities.

If we are coming from these points, we simply return to U.S. 70 and travel through Las Cruces to reach the Aguirre Springs turnoff. The access is straightforward and suitable for all vehicles.

We recommend keeping a map handy or using GPS navigation to follow the route precisely, especially since the roads connect to various natural landmarks in southern New Mexico.

Amenities And Activities

At Aguirre Springs Road, we find a variety of amenities suited for different camping preferences. The area includes a developed campground with over 50 tent-only sites.

Many sites offer covered picnic tables, fire pits, and grills. Parking is generally gravel, making it accessible for trailers and smaller RVs, but the setting supports dispersed camping on nearby BLM land for a more primitive experience.

Hiking is one of the main activities here. The area features two National Recreation Trails, including the Baylor Pass Trail, offering scenic routes through the wilderness.

These trails are suitable for various skill levels, and we often encounter opportunities for wildlife and birdwatching.

Biking enthusiasts can also explore the area via multiple open dirt roads and less-traveled paths. The mix of elevation and terrain provides a moderate challenge and fresh landscapes to enjoy.

The Aguirre Springs area lies within a designated wilderness zone, preserving natural conditions for a quiet and immersive outdoor experience. We appreciate that this balance of development and wilderness helps maintain the area’s natural beauty while providing us with access and basic amenities.

For those interested in dispersed camping beyond the campground, nearby BLM lands offer several spots to set up away from the main facilities. This appeals especially to those seeking solitude, self-sufficiency, and closer contact with the natural environment.
