About Us & Boondocking

$Runner & Roof Top Tent

John Rodgers Laurel Rodgers

John & Laurel Rodgers – Retired mid‑70s travelers, now full-time boondockers exploring the U.S. in our trusty Toyota 4Runner with a rooftop tent.

Our Story: From World Travel to U.S. Boondocking

We’ve been life partners since 1999, married over 25 years now. In 2014, we sold nearly everything to chase our dreams of travel and exploration—visiting more than 153 countries together. COVID and a hip replacement prompted a change of pace, but not a dwindling of wanderlust. So, we refitted our 4WD 4Runner with a rooftop tent kitchen setup, solar panels, propane cooking, and a 270° awning—ready for boondocking across America .

Our home is wherever we park—whether on Bureau of Land Management tracts, National Forest, Corps of Engineers land, or state-managed sites. We typically move every week or two between supply runs.

Why We Enjoy Boondocking

Boondocking is more than camping for us—it’s a lifestyle rooted in freedom, simplicity, and connection with nature. We love:

  • Living off-grid in nature, away from crowds, costs, and constraints.
  • Sharing knowledge—from location GPS to road types, amenities, rules, and Leave-No-Trace tips.
  • Community building, helping others discover wild places and boondock responsibly.
  • Culinary creativity—cooking hearty meals by fire or propane encourages resourcefulness. Plus, the fresh air just makes food taste better.

The Mechanics of Our Mobile Home

  1. Toyota 4Runner – A robust, capable off-road platform upgraded with solar, propane, and rooftop tent.
  2. Rooftop tent – Quick to set up and take down; gives us a cozy, off-ground nest at each stop.
  3. Kitchen & energy setup – A back-of-truck kitchen with propane stove, solar-charged battery system, and minimal reliance on hookups.

This combo allows us to stay in places that fit us—on dirt, gravel, or public land—without sacrificing comfort or costs.

A Life Redesigned by Freedom

At 74 and 76, respectively, we’re the living proof that age isn’t a limit—it’s an invitation. For us, every sunrise off‑grid is fuel for our souls. Whether waking by the Rio Grande, listening to crickets under National Forest stars, or cooking over propane near silent woodlands—every moment reminds us why we chose this path.

Connect & Join Our Journey

1. Tap into our site daily—it’s evolving with new locations and tips from the field.
2. Reach out! We love helping new boondockers get started or deep-dive into cooler spots. Ask us anything—gear, cooking, routes, permits—you name it.
3. One thing we ask of you! If we have make a mistake, let us know so we can fix it. We want BoondockingLocations to always be up to date. We are talking about: if the location is PAID and not FREE, if the Pricing for a night has changed, if a site has closed down for good, or if it now requires a PERMIT.
